Baby monitors are another set of ears and, eyes, if you get a video one, it allows you to monitor your baby while they sleep. There are basically two types: video/audio or just audio.

A baby monitor attempts to transmit recognizable sound and or images over some distance with nominal interference, buzzing, static or frustrating noise from electronic products in your home along with transmitters like cordless phones that split common frequency bands, cellular phones, appliances, and even fluorescent lights. Interference can come from hearing someone else’s chat, which makes it hard to interpret the sounds coming from your baby over the monitor in your home.

Think about your residence and lifestyle. You may be grateful for a monitor with sound and lights, so you can see when your baby cries.

Consider your phone. To reduce the possibility of interference, opt for a monitor that operates on a different frequency band from the other products in your home.

Think about digital if you have close neighbors who also have babies. If you need to be certain the sounds transmitted by the monitor are heard by only you and not by neighbors who may have the same kind of model, go with a digital one, not an analog monitor.

If you expect interference and want to spend fewer than 200 bucks, purchase a lower priced digital baby monitor that is not on the same frequency band as other wireless products in your home, and consider models with more than two channels.

The audio video combination monitors we tested have tiny color screens, and not like earlier models, convincingly good pictures. However, we found these to be vulnerable to interference, from microwave ovens in use in particular.

As was mentioned earlier, the nearer your monitor’s frequency is to that of other devices in the home, like cordless phones, the more likely you’ll hear static or cross talk. One manufacturer, a new frequency band: 1.9GHz, is Philips Electronics solution to this issue.

When the baby makes a sound, with this common feature, a monitor’s lights turn on the louder he cries, the more lights light up. This is an important feature.

Another important feature is a light or beep that informs you that you’ve reached the range limit of the monitor.

Look for a monitor with a light or an icon on an LCD display that lets you know the batteries in your parent unit are running low.

Having two parent units is a bonus, you can keep one receiver close to your bed and carry the other around with you during the day.  It also allows you and your spouse to monitor the babies at the same time.

·       Some monitors let you add more cameras, a VCR, or webcam so the system covers more areas in your house.

·       Attaching the monitor to your baby’s crib.
